Internship Opportunities, N-Z List

Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Laboratory for the Structure of Matter, Washington, DC *

Mission Statement for the Internship

The purpose of this experience is to provide a working and learning opportunity for an undergraduate chemistry student at a modern government laboratory. The Laboratory for the Structure of Matter is a state-of-the-art X-ray crystallographic facility. It is a division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) located in Washington DC. The student would work one-on-one with a research scientist during the entire summer. The mentor will assign the student certain responsibilities in the laboratory relating to the current crystallographic research being undertaken. At the same time, the mentor will be teaching the student the basics of X-ray crystallography. This includes learning the fundamentals of crystallographic theory, as well as being able to learn about the current instrumentation that is being employed in the laboratory.

Program Objectives

Objective 1: Learn about data management, how the information is cataloged, and how obtained data is stored in a structural database. The student will be eventually be given responsibilities in this area.

Objective 2: Learn about different crystallization methods. The student will be expected to aid in recrystallizations.

Objective 3: Learning the basics of crystallography. This includes being taught the fundamentals of crystallographic theory by the mentor. Also, the student will be exposed to the modern instrumentation currently available in the laboratory.

Selection Criteria for the internship:

Requirements

Competency Assessments

The mentor for this internship will be Dr. Damon Parrish. He will be evaluating the student based on several criteria. These include:

Program Incentives (what the intern will gain from this experience)

Upon completion of the internship, the student will leave with a basic understanding of X-ray crystallography. This is an essential technique that has applications in all areas of chemistry. The student will have a better understanding of how a modern laboratory operates, what it is like to collaborate and work with other scientists, and what it means to be a professional scientist.

Work schedule

The student will be employed for approximately 10-12 weeks, working around the spring and fall semester schedule, as well as the student's vacation schedule. The student will be expected to work full time, or 40 hour work weeks, in accordance with the schedule of Dr. Parrish. A typical day would be 8AM to 5PM with an hour for lunch.

Compensation

Pay will be approximately $400 - $500 per week, depending on the student's qualifications. If possible, we will work with the student and Washington College to assist the individual in receiving college credit.

Supervision

Dr. Damon Parrish will be supervising the student during the appointment. He will be responsible for the organization, execution, and evaluation of the internship and intern.
