Industry: Construction

Available: Beginning Fall 2005

Description of Company: Family owned multi-site paving and construction company employing 15 professional staff and 250 skilled workers based in Chestertown, Maryland since it began in 1947.

Internship: Intern will become familiar with business operations of multi-site paving and construction company while working in the administrative office at the Chestertown headquarters as well as at one or more of the field offices. In the administrative office, the intern will be engaged in multiple tasks including working with estimators, logistics, and scheduling. Interns will also participate in staff meetings and hiring functions. In the lab at the Massey plant, the intern will learn the process of estimating and distribution.

This is a paid internship available during the summer and fall/spring academic terms and will involve a minimum of 8-10 hours per week on site with supervision provided by the HR Director.

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (formerly Horsehead Wetlands Center) is a 500-acre preserve focusing on education, restoration and recreation.

Qualifications: Background in Business Management with an interest in Environmental Science.

Duties: Limited number of internships available. Intern projects are developed jointly by CBEC staff and sponsoring faculty in the areas of conservation, education and research. Projects will involve database management and development, marketing, research on client base, operations of non-profit.

Location: Grasonville, Queen Anne's County, MD.

Length of internship: Flexible. Semester long internships are available for spring, summer and fall.

Stipend: Unpaid; independent study credit can be arranged.

Delmarva Foundation Communications Internship

Delmarva Foundation, a national, not-for-profit organization that works with healthcare providers (hospitals, doctor's offices, home health agencies and nursing homes) to improve the quality and value of service, is seeking a qualified intern to work 15-25 hours a week in their Corporate Communications Department. This Department works to position the company correctly for the healthcare industry and the communities it serves. It also is responsible for the branding, messaging and education of key audiences on important company information. As a key player in this 300 person, 30 million dollar company with government and private sector clients, an intern will experience a unique business case study The best candidate for this internship will be someone who can write well, communicate effectively, work independently, multi-task and feel comfortable interacting with senior management. Preferably the candidate is majoring or interested in marketing, public relations, or corporate communications.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

The intern will be exposed to the entire Delmarva family and be eligible to participate in company continuing education and development exercises. Delmarva will expose the individual to work relating to the quality of health care for seniors, the disabled, and the underserved. Other department heads will educate the intern on how their department runs and the unique contribution they make to the company as a whole.

Dixon Valve Internship Program in Business Management

Available: Fall 2005

Fall Term - Accounting Department

The spring semester will continue the learning cycle with an opportunity to work in the other operational areas within the company. By moving the Purchasing Department and then on to Sales and Distribution the student will get the general overall impression and knowledge of how a real company works.

Spring Term - Operating Departments

The schedule can be modified to fit within the student intern's academic schedule but prefer three days per week if possible, however a two day week can be accommodated. Minimum: 8-10 hours per week. This is a paid internship.

Kent County Chamber of Commerce

Available: Spring 2005

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce is proposing the following tasks to be designated for assignment to a Washington College Intern. The duration of this position would be one semester, to be reviewed for continuation of the program. The tasks defined here would be completed in coordination with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.

Marketing Committee

The intern will be an "observing" member of the Marketing Committee of the Chamber of Commerce with the following responsibilities:

  1. Work with the Committee Chair and Board Liaison to establish a Membership drive to occur prior to the end of the calendar year. The following steps would be taken:
    • Review current membership status;
    • Determine process for running membership drive to include participants; goals; length of time; follow up process
  2. Review and renew the current Membership application packet for information and visual appeal. Identify members who have not renewed and prepare plan to pursue their renewal. This plan would include personal letter; follow up telephone call(s); establish follow up visits with the Chamber Executive Director and/or the Marketing Board Liaison.
  3. Prepare follow-up on individuals who have previously expressed an interest in joining the Chamber but have not taken that step. This process should include follow up phone call to ensure receipt of information; call for questions to ensure understanding of material; set up personal visit.
  4. Design advertising campaign to keep the Chamber and its activities in front of the public. Coordinate with Events Committee Chair.

Events Committee

The intern will be an active member of the Events Committee of the Chamber of Commerce with the following responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate with the Marketing Committee to ensure that events are advertised and marketed in a timely manner.
  2. Prepare advertising and press releases on all events
  3. Assist the committee with details of fundraisers and other regular events.
  4. Take responsibility for membership meetings.
    • Conduct a monthly review of scheduled meetings, to include breakfast/luncheon general meetings; quarterly town meetings; and annual events to include the Awards Banquet and the Ag Breakfast.
    • Confirm location, menu, and cost; prepare press releases; prepare agendas; identify program and get speakers; log RSVPs; coordinate with financial contractor on billing attendees
  5. Assist Executive Director with monthly preparation of newsletter; annual elections; Awards Banquet (to include preparing nomination letters; and awards selection); Business Directory
  6. Assist with other duties as needed.

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director will work directly with the intern and provide written goals and objectives for tasks assigned. The ED will provide hands-on assistance and will also provide a written evaluation of work performed at the end of (each) internship.

Compensation:

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce will compensate the intern with daily lunch and gasoline money to be paid bi-monthly.

Hours:

The intern will work a minimum of 8-10 hours per week in preferred segments of four or more hours per day in two to three days per week.
